United Kingdom — Balance of Payments

The United Kingdom offers the longest continuous balance-of-payments record in the Lewis platform, running back to 1948.[1] The modern British external position pairs a chronic goods deficit with substantial services surpluses (finance, insurance, business services) and a historically important primary income balance.

The component decomposition shows how services and income have repeatedly offset the goods deficit — and how that cushioning has thinned in recent decades.

The current and financial accounts again move as mirror images, with net errors and omissions absorbing measurement gaps.
